Supporting Early Career Researchers: ANZSOC’s New Online ECR Seminar Series

In Summary
  • ANZSOC is launching an online seminar series to support Early Career Researchers (ECRs).
  • Sessions will focus on practical skills and professional development, with topics ranging from research promotion and journal reviewing to career navigation and fostering a supportive academic culture.
  • Your input is vital – send your suggestions for topics, speakers, and scheduling preferences to Dr Lisa Wheildon at lisaw@ntv.org.au

ANZSOC’s Postgraduate and Early Career Researcher (ECR) Representative, Dr Lisa Wheildon, is launching a new online seminar series tailored specifically to address the unique challenges and opportunities facing ECRs.“We want to create a supportive space where ECRs can learn practical skills, share experiences, and build meaningful connections with others in the field,” she explains.

Lisa understands that the early stages of an academic career can be overwhelming and exciting. “Every ECR deserves access to the support and resources needed to thrive in this environment.”

“The series will cover everything from promoting your research and reviewing journal papers to navigating the job market—and, just as importantly, how to maintain well-being and build collaborative relationships while doing it!”

These sessions will run monthly or bi-monthly (frequency to be determined based on your feedback) and will feature diverse speakers, including senior researchers, journal editors, and professionals from academic and non-academic sectors.

Help Shape This Initiative!

This seminar series is being created for you and with you. To make it truly valuable, we need your input:

  • What topics would be most beneficial to your academic and professional development right now?
  • Which speakers would provide insights relevant to your research interests or career goals?
  • When would you attend? Share your preferred days/times to help us maximise participation.

“This initiative belongs to the ECR community,” Lisa emphases. “Your suggestions will directly shape the content of these sessions.”

Ready to contribute? Email your ideas to Dr Lisa Wheildon at lisaw@ntv.org.au by March 31. The first seminar is planned for April, so your timely input will help us create a program that meets your needs.

Stay tuned for the inaugural session announcement coming soon!!

We are constantly changing; thus, criminology can and does change. ECRs, new people, and ideas coming into the field are not just crucial, but they are the driving force in shaping the future of criminology. Your unique perspectives and fresh ideas are what will propel the field forward. Sometimes, it’s just hard to see at the time, and it’s only with the benefit of hindsight that we can assess how much things have changed.”
