Biannual Tony Vinson Memorial Lecture

The University of Wollongong, in partnership with the Australian and New Zealand Society of Criminology (ANZSOC), is excited to announce they are hosting the Second biannual Tony Vinson Memorial Lecture as part of Social Sciences Week 2021.

The Tony Vinson Memorial lecture celebrates the seminal contributions and achievements of Tony Vinson in criminal justice and the social sciences over more than five decades. Tony Vinson (AM) was regarded as one of Australia’s leading social scientists and public intellectuals. Vinson’s many achievements include his work as the Commissioner of the NSW Department of Corrections, and his research into ‘postcode disadvantage’ which led to the major report ‘Dropping off the Edge: The Distribution of Disadvantage in Australia’. In 2008, Vinson was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day Honours for his services to social welfare.

The 2021 event will feature Professor Eileen Baldry (UNSW) and Professor Ross Homel (Griffith University) in conversation reflecting on the legacy of Tony Vinson’s career focusing on understanding and addressing disadvantage. Professors Baldry and Homel will explore the distribution of disadvantage, and discuss a way towards a better understanding of the nature and persistence of structural disadvantage.
