EVENT: Illicit Firearms Markets: Challenges and Solutions

Join the Deakin Crime and Criminology group, online or in-person for a discussion on Illicit Firearms Markets.

Speakers include Prof. David Bright, Ms. Fenna van der Wijk, Dr. Monique Mann and Det. Supt. Jason Kelly.

Illicit firearms are an enabler of organized criminal groups and of illicit markets. Illicit firearms facilitate battles for market dominance, deter state actors from intervening, and are used to threaten and coerce communities, to extort money from victims, and to facilitate engagement in a range of other organized crimes. Firearms are used to gain dominance in conflicts between organized criminal groups, to protect and extend territories, and to facilitate other crimes including kidnapping, extortion, and armed robbery. In this seminar we will hear from four speakers on illicit firearms trafficking, the threat posed by new technologies and 3D printed firearms, and the use of illicit firearms by members of organized criminal groups. Each presenter will speak for approximately 15 minutes, followed by Q&A and discussion panel.
